‘ZENDEACOTT’
You will probably have already realised that Zendeacott is a simple mash-up of two words, two personally significant names, Zen and Endeacott. That may seem whimsical of me and a weak attempt at being cool and witty but there is actually an ‘origins’ chapter in this new story of mine.
In the winter of 2021, I was fortunate enough to meet with one of my heroes, Marcelo Bielsa, a few times over in Oslo, Norway. Forget your football rivalries, Bielsa transcends such piffling matters, his public persona in the sport is very different to that of real life. Away from football, he is the epitome of wisdom, understanding and compassion, in my relatively humble opinion. No doubt he has his faults, in football management at least and I am pretty sure he would be the first to recognise them, but when it comes down to being able to see things clearly, and caring, he is up there with the best of them. He is cool and he cares about the important things in life. For me, he is a great example of Zen-ness.
Being Zen, to me at least, is being calm, relaxed, philosophical, attentive, caring, along with the ability to demonstrate grace at all times, especially when under pressure. These are all qualities I aspire to. Perhaps I am aiming too high but I will keep trying. Regardless, this is how Zendeacott was born, starting as a chapter in the book Marcelo On Together co-authored with Ian Thornton, one of the most Zen people I am lucky enough to know. Here, on this website you are looking at, Zendeacott is my Art name, a brand even, which I want to somehow do good with, to appeal and to entertain. I truly hope you like it, or at least appreciate what I’m trying to say and do.
All the best, thank you for looking!
Mural Series
I painted my first wall mural at the start of this century. Yes, that makes me feel old. At the time I was pushing pens in an office as a career which was slowing to a stall, really, and so I took two weeks’ leave to fill a load of wallspace in my favourite football stadium. The mural was well-received but it was over a decade before I picked up the mural-painting brushes again. By then I had left the corporate world to try and almost re-invent myself as a full-time writer.
In the last decade or so, I have painted a fair few murals, the majority being connected to my football team. Many of those Leeds ones (again in the stadium) were done with the immense help of great friends Paul Kent and Johnny. Since then, I can often be seen on a plot of land on Elland Road opposite the stadium’s south stand.
That ‘contract of work’ may be approaching the end now (as of June 2026) but I am hoping to branch out a little by the way of ‘mobile murals’ which I will share with you when I know more about the venture and it is proven to be NOT a daft idea! I’m a traditional murals creator, or recreator more like, using the grid method and good old-fashioned pencils and paint and brushes. I thoroughly enjoy muralising, trying always to get the best most realistic likeness of what or whoever the subject of the painting is.
Thanks as always for visiting this site, reading my words and viewing my artworks, we’d be nothing without you!

A Busy Few Months… And Plenty More to Come
It’s been a busy few months in the world of Zendeacott. Actually, busy might be putting it mildly. There seems to be a lot happening at the moment, with my time divided between paint, pencils, words, ideas and the occasional attempt to work out which project I should be concentrating on now AND next! One thing I’ve learned over the years is that creativity rarely follows a neat timetable. One project leads to another, an idea appears from nowhere, a conversation sparks something else and,...

Painting Leeds United – Murals from the Heart
As an artist (to be honest, I prefer to use ‘painter’ but what can you do?), you're always hoping for projects that allow you to leave something behind, something that becomes part of a place rather than just hanging on a wall. Painting Leeds United murals in Beeston is exactly that. Being asked to create art celebrating Leeds United is never just another commission, I regard it as more an opportunity to contribute something permanent to the city that has inspired so much of my work over the...

Swircles
Because I just knew that it couldn’t be a new invention, I investigated the word ‘swircles’ before adopting it for my own use. It turns out that it is an old knitting term, used in Europe, particularly France. That’s no surprise, the French always loved revolutions! Sorry, rubbish joke. Anyway, it’s a great word and felt perfect for my new painting venture.
A significant part of my work is mixing paint so as to arrive at the correct/appropriate tone and shade for whatever subject I’m working on. For as long as I remember, the actual physical process of mixing colours has been a visual treat and it opened up a new world for me. Or was I just being a bit silly and over-enthusiastic? I will leave viewers to answer that. All I know is that when I mix paint, in circular pots or palette wells, I am always captivated by the sumptuous colours and unique swirls generated in those little circles. And that, folks, is how my Swircles began, I set out to re-create them as well as I can, on round canvases.
